We’re trying to think up themes:

Taryn: Androgynous people.

Jori: (frown) I hate androgynous people… and androgynous names.

Taryn: … we both have androgynous names.

Jori: … damnit.

Weird Breakfasts

I asked Jori what he wanted for breakfast this morning and the first time, he said “Belgian waffles with strawberry topping and whipped cream” and the second time I asked he said “A tall glass of orange juice and a tall glass of coffee”.  The above image is the result. The Rabba strawberries were surprisingly good. We plan to have it again for dessert.

Below is an image of our oatmeal yesterday.  It had blueberries and oranges in it.  I also.. put chocolate in it. It was super good. It may sound and look disgusting, but it’s really good.  The reason why I ended up putting chocolate in it was because we were using oranges. Orange + chocolate = good combo. I’m not sure how often I’m going to slip chocolate into my oatmeal though.. oranges though?  Good idea.

I also had a conversation with a man that I was cashing out at Longos the other day about grilled cheese. Somehow the conversation ended up on what we like with grilled cheese.  One of his favourite was frying ham when you do your grilled cheese and at the last minute slip in the ham.  Then he told me that if you just make plain grilled cheese and put peanut butter on top right after you finish it you would have one of the best grilled cheeses you’ve tasted.  He said he sold over 100 people on it. I’m tempted to try it. The woman after him seemed to be grossed out by the idea though.

So here’s another Pho Saigon inspired meal.  I bought rice paper and vermicelli from work and made summer rolls!  Or a poor student version.  Yesterday before I went to my cousin’s wedding I made some mango rolls but I was in such a rush that I didn’t end up taking any pictures. This time I ended up putting in napa cabbage, bean sprouts, enoki mushrooms, cucumber and imitation crab meat. I plan to make them with meat some other time and make the peanut sauce when I get my hoisin sauce back. They’re pretty fast to make, I was super impressed.

We Made Sushi!
I’ve always really wanted to make maki sushi or inverted sushi. Yesterday it was pouring outside and I decided that I’d love to walk half an hour to No Frills. I trekked down there and with one reusable bag and (of course) bought more than I should have or at least more than I could reasonably fit into the bag. Being a master of Tetris, I got it to mostly fit and asked for a three dollar cash back to take the bus (I know, I’m stupid). I walked out of there realizing that I they didn’t carry wasabi and walked over to Wasabi Teriyaki which was conveniently next door.  I’m not really sure as to what I was thinking but I just asked how much wasabi would be.  Being three dollars, I sacrificed my bus fare for wasabi and walked all the way home in the pouring rain.

It took a lot longer than I had expected because I forgot about the rice cooling down. The first picture above shows all the ingredients that I chopped up to go into the sushi. They are: shitaki mushrooms, fried egg, imitation crab meat, cucumber, avocado and fried tofu.  Beside it are our first couple of rolls. I ate all of my first one because it didn’t roll up completely and fell apart, as did most of our first rolls. They’re just clumped together in the photo so they don’t apart. The inverted maki turned out pretty sweet, but I didn’t make enough rice so we didn’t make many of those. The rice screwed me over again with my unsubstantial amount prepared. Sushi uses so much rice!

“K, what if we just put rice by the edges?” -JB

So above is our final result.  You can click on all the images to enlarge them.

Jori’s favourite combo
1. Lots of cucumber, medium crab, little avocado
2. “ALL VEGGIE” - even amounts of avocado, cucumber and mushroom.

Taryn’s favourite combo
1.  Lots of crab, lots of avacado
2. Egg and mushroom

Here’s some sequential shots, click to enlarge!
